ENERGETICKÝ A PRŮMYSLOVÝ HOLDING buys the Silesia mine in Poland

29.6.2010

Kompania Węglowa and PG Silesia (Przedsiębiorstwo Górnicze „SILESIA" Spółka z o.o.) signed today an agreement on the sale of the Silesia hard coal mine (Ruch II Silesia kopalni Brzeszcze-Silesia) to PG Silesia. PG Silesia is part of the ENERGETICKÝ A PRŮMYSLOVÝ HOLDING group.

The closing of the transaction will take place once the Polish Ministry of the interior has granted its consent to the purchase of farmland and forest land, the mining concession has been transferred to the buyer, and the issue of the rights to the commercial use of geological information in PG Silesia has been resolved.
PG Silesia submitted its bid to buy the Silesia mine in the tendering process in October last year. The KWK Silesia mine is situated approximately 30 kilometres from Poland's national border with the Czech Republic. The industrial reserves of hard coal (down to a depth of 1,000 metres) in this mine amount to about 100 million tonnes.
"We are glad that this transaction is being finalised," said Jacek Korski, Kompania Węglowa Vice-Chairman. "We are not afraid of the competition from the new entity, and we will carefully monitor the new solutions proposed by the strategic investor to PG Silesia," added Mr Korski.
"We are planning to invest hundreds of millions of Polish zlotys in the latest extraction technologies and in the overall modernisation of the Silesia mine," said Tomáš David, Energy Sector Development Director in the ENERGETICKÝ A PRŮMYSLOVÝ HOLDING group. "I believe that thanks to these investments, we will be able to keep the current number of employees at the Silesia mine, while envisaging a further development of this mine and increasing the number of employees going forward," added Mr David.

ENERGETICKÝ A PRŮMYSLOVÝ HOLDING is a long-term strategic investor in the energy sector. It includes more than 20 companies operating in electricity and heat production, electricity trading and distribution, energy supply to final customers, power engineering, electricity installation services, and other fields. ENERGETICKÝ A PRŮMYSLOVÝ HOLDING currently has generating plants with a total installed capacity of 330 MWe, and is on track to successfully meet its target of increasing the total installed capacity of its plants to approximately 1,000 MWe by 2012.

Kompania Węglowa employs more than 62,000 persons. It is the largest company in the European Union in terms of steam coal production. It operates 15 mines.
